The Champlain Classic Running Race was started in 1990 to help raise awareness and funding for the Shelburne trail network. In the past twenty seven years, 4,321 runners have laced on their shoes and run through Shelburne in celebration of spring and physical fitness. The Shelburne Recreation Department has decided that the Champlain Classic has "run its course" and will no longer be held. As founder and past race director, I want to thank those who have worked tirelessly to provide a wonderful event for our community and local runners. Each year dozens of volunteers dedicated their Sunday morning to hand out water, set cones, cut bagels, and insure the safety of all participants. Town employees and Recreation Board members were always on hand to support the event. Local businesses like Fleet Feet, Automaster, Shelburne Market, and many more have provided goods or services to the race over the years. Without the support of those businesses, the race would never have lasted as long as it did. The Shelburne Museum was host for many years in the 1990s and should be thanked for their hospitality. This event has been a part of my family for 27 years, my children grew up volunteering or racing each year. I am thankful for the opportunity we had to serve our community.
Since I won't be timing this year, on May 6th I'll be running my first Champlain Classic in twenty eight years at 9:00 am from the Town Hall. If you want to join me, I'll pick up a dozen bagels, and we'll run the trails of Shelburne together.
